With life in lockdown turning our normal day-to-day lives upside down – we’re all understandably feeling a little bit lost and out of sorts.

Thankfully for our small family run business, we are able to continue creating and delivering our reclaimed furniture to our wonderful customers whilst abiding by government guidelines and social distancing rules. And for that, we are incredibly grateful.

However, we know the uncertainty right now is hard for us all. With our entire world now confined to our own four walls, we wanted to focus on the little ways in which we can bring a little ray of sunshine to our everyday.

Now more than ever, we are grateful for the little sanctuary our gardens or outdoor spaces at home offer. Whether your garden is your children’s (and husbands!) penalty shoot-out zone, your ‘Chelsea Flower Show’ award entry, or your perfect little suntrap for some much needed me time. We wanted to share with our lovely customers and followers’ different ways that you can transform your outdoor space into the extra room you need during the lockdown and the brighter days beyond.

 

Planning Your Outdoor Space

With the famously unpredictable British summer in full swing, it’s time to throw open the patio doors and maximise your garden space. One of the most used areas of our homes during the warmer months and a safe sanctuary for us during lockdown, our gardens deserve just as much attention as any bedroom, bathroom or living room.

Our patio or garden is the main spot we spend our summers in. From sipping homemade summer cocktails to intimate al fresco brunches; family dinners under the warm setting sun to giggles and summer games –  we have created the perfect How-To guide to help you plan your outdoor space to make the most of the Great British summer from the safety of your own home.

 

1. Plan around your family and your space

When looking to revamp your outdoor area into the extra room you and your family need, the first most important decision you need to make is about how your family want to use the space.

Your garden design should revolve around you. Outdoor dining furniture is a great way to ‘zone’ your outdoor space and add multiple uses for your garden. However, if your family likes a kick about, or you’re a keen ‘grow your own’ gardener – make sure you consider this when planning where your furniture will go. By defining areas of the garden around your family’s needs you know that whatever additions you add into the mix will complement the space and use perfectly.

 

2. Follow the sun!

Another consideration to bear in mind when planning your multi-use space is where the sun moves throughout the day. If you’re an early bird and want to enjoy a brunch and coffee whilst reading in the beautiful morning sun – then see if you can plan your outdoor dining space around the morning sun. Obviously, this may be easier for some gardens than others! But if you have the space and the sunshine – then make sure you consider when and where you are most likely to enjoy it throughout the day.

 

3. Clear the space

Now that you have a rough idea of how you want to use your space – it’s time to get your hands dirty and have a good clear out. With most of us searching for tasks we can do to maximise the extra time we now have at home; this is the perfect opportunity to get the kids and partners involved! Jet wash, weed, paint and remove any garden furniture or equipment you don’t use anymore.

Before you get too carried away clearing your garden, bear in mind that many things can be recycled, reused, and re-loved in so many different ways! We are all about breathing new life into old – so maybe store items which you can either sell, give away or spend some time upcycling into new accessories for your beautiful new outdoor space. Think like Heyl and always reuse and re-love where you can!

 

4. Invest in garden furniture that lasts summer after summer

With a beautifully blank (green) canvas – now it’s time to invest the perfect garden furniture that will last you summer after summer. Not only should you consider the style and design, but also the size and quality of your latest addition.

Hopefully with your outdoor living and dining space now clearly defined in your garden, define the perfect furniture dimensions according to your space and consider a seating arrangement that compliments your lifestyle and family.

Outdoor benches work well for those who enjoy entertaining (post-lock-down of course) as they don’t restrict the number of seats. Whereas individual chairs and seats offer more flexibility to move and rearrange the space where necessary.

Whilst solar powered fairy lights offer another way to create a calm welcoming light… enticing you to go out and enjoy your garden evening after evening.

 

6. Time to accessorise!

With your perfect furniture arrangement on order and your exciting new garden space taking shape – now you can start accessorizing. Not only can you get excited about refreshing your outdoor tableware collection, either through some crafty upcycling or newly purchased items, but you can also start adding those finishing touches that will really enhance your outdoor space.

Plush furnishings such as outdoor cushions and fluffy throws can soften the look and feel, whilst adding that warm welcoming touch. Whereas vibrant pops of colour through accessories, plant pots or even a brightly coloured wall can create a fresh revitalising space that makes you smile.

Remember to re-use, recycle and re-love old accessories and bits and bobs where you can. It’s fun to get crafty! Dining Al Fresco During Lockdown

Now more than ever we are looking for ways which we can enjoy the outside within the safety of our own homes. Those of us lucky enough to have gardens or outside space during the Covid-19 lockdown are definitely grateful for the opportunity this personal sanctuary offers during this time.

With the children at home and most of us turning our dining tables into a make-shift office space or a classroom from 9-5, our gardens are the perfect place to unwind and separate the day from the evening.

Being confined to our homes is unknown territory for many of us. But mealtime in the garden can be a great way to escape that ‘Groundhog Day’ feeling and expand those four walls within which we have been spending most of our time.

As glimmers of the Great British Summer begin to warm up our winter-weary souls, providing us with some much-needed hope and warmth during this strange time – we think that dining al-fresco is the perfect opportunity to bring the household together.

Who doesn’t love a date night? With lockdown putting date nights outside the home on pause for now – we think a romantic candlelit dinner in the garden sounds just perfect!

Interior Design Ideas for Small Spaces

As more architects explore the potential of tiny homes, finding ways to optimise small interiors is a growing area of interest for designers. Some minimalists advocate that living with less creates simplicity, efficiency and a calmer existence, allowing us to focus on what’s important. Could downsizing be the answer?

Whatever your living situation, there are plenty of ways to make a small room feel bigger. If space is at a premium, here are some of the best interior design solutions for a small house or home.

Mirrors

Mirrors are one of the simplest ways to create the illusion of a larger room, particularly if placed directly opposite a window. Try creating another window by placing a mirror next to or across from the real deal. The reflection maximise the effect of natural light and pleasant outdoor views, allowing you to appreciate them from multiple angles.

Place a mirror behind a light source. Whether it’s behind a candle, a pendant light, or a bedside lamp, a mirror will help to maximise the light’s reach while creating an almost magical effect.

Lighten up

The darker the walls the closer they’ll come towards you, so there’s a reason why so many of us reach for the white paint – it makes rooms appear larger. But there is so much more you can do with the right lighting. First and foremost, don’t rely on a single light source in the centre of the room. One ceiling lamp will only cast a pool of light on the middle of the floor. Instead, use multiple light sources around the room to open it up, such as floor lamps in corners and table lamps on sideboards. This will spread focus across the full area of the room.

Use wall lights to enhance corners or recesses and try long pendants to emphasise the height of a room. Make a statement with a big flamboyant lamp;  There are two (apparently opposite) schools of thought concerning objects and ornaments in a small space: either restrict yourself to proportionately small items, or just have one or two big ones. So you could try having a single big statement lamp with a flamboyant shade in an otherwise emptyish room…

Being able to see the floor underneath your furniture will make the room feel more spacious, so choose furniture with legs rather than big bulky pieces. Don’t be tempted to squash furniture right up against the wall – giving it some breathing space will also make things feel more roomy.

Find the perfect dining table for a small space

Small spaces pose notoriously tricky problems and decorating them can sometimes feel like trying to solve a puzzle. The lack of square footage equates to a lack of storage space, which means things can quickly get a lot more cluttered, and then there’s the challenge of showing off your style in an oddly shaped room while still trying to make it a functional area.

You want to fit as much in as possible, but the room mustn’t feel cramped. You want it to be filled with personality, but it can’t look chaotic and cluttered. But it’s possible to have a small space that’s as stylish (or perhaps even more so) as their sprawling counterparts. Whether you’re starting out in a studio apartment or choosing to live a more minimalist existence, you don’t need to sacrifice style.

Table Designs For Small Dining Rooms

The beauty of finding a dining table to fit your space is that they come in a multitude of shapes and sizes. Some also come in dining sets so you know exactly what you’re getting.

A rectangular dining table is probably the most popular choice – working, as it does, in a multitude of room set-ups and scenarios. If you are lucky enough to have a separate dining room, they will make the most of a rectangular shaped room, even if it’s quite narrow.

Our tip is to measure the available floor space. Allow around 75cm around each side of the table for a chair and enough space for you to manoeuvre yourself into position. Armed with these measurements you’ll know exactly the size table you’re looking for. There are, of course, exceptions – if you’re pushing your table to one side during periods of non-use, just ensure there’s an area of space within pushing/pulling distance to accommodate the table and its chairs (felt feet would be a handy addition to each table foot if you have wooden floors).

Rectangular tables work really well in eat-in, galley-style kitchens. They are particularly sociable – not too wide, so you can indulge in conversation with those seated opposite. They also have the benefit of someone being able to sit at the ‘head’ of the table – a highlight that appeals to those with illusion of grandeur! Think about glass topped dining tables as an option to consider. Being see-through, they are canny illusionists in creating the feeling of space when, in reality, it’s in limited supply.

The leg design can work to your advantage. Be canny in your choice and you can free up floorspace to trick the eye into creating ‘space’. Picking something without obstructive legs can allow you to seat more bums at the table without it feeling overcrowded. Look to corner-legged tables or trestle-legged designs which work particularly well with bench seating.

The Problem With Small Dining Rooms

The main reason that a dining table has never been your main focus might be because you don’t have a designated room to dine in. As the trend for open plan living shows no signs of going away and the luxury of a separate dining room becomes a distant memory, other areas of your home might have to work harder to accommodate a small dining table. But you’ll find these hiding in plain sight.

A bay window provides the perfect space for a dining table and is often overlooked as a dining space – it can really set off a small space and create real impact. The same goes for an alcove. You might have one to the side of a chimney breast in your living room and this could be just the nook you need.

Some house layouts have a disused space under the stairs. A dining table works well here as you don’t need full height standing room. As long as you can slide yourself in (and out without clunking you head!), you’ll find this space, so often relegated to life as a makeshift cloakroom/dumping ground, works well for cosy dinners. The other area so obviously conducive to dining is the kitchen. A tiny corner could house a bistro table for two – folding chairs could even be hung on the back of a kitchen door when not in use.

The floor space below a kitchen window is an often available and much maligned ‘free’ space. Possibly unsuitable for kitchen cabinets and often dominated by an under-window radiator, a dining table won’t obstruct the heat distribution too radically, even when it’s slammed up against the wall to free up the floor between uses.

Once upon a time, red and gold or green and silver were thought to be the two most classic Christmas colour schemes of all. Then came the reign of the multi-coloured Christmas where kaleidoscopic lights, decorations and tinsel dominated the trees of the 1980s. And now to today the question is which colours to choose to decorate your home in a way that’s sophisticated but just-right for the festive season too?

HOW TO CHOOSE A CHRISTMAS COLOUR SCHEME

Where to begin when considering Christmas interior design? The golden rule – stay true to your homes interior scheme when it comes to the style of your festive interior. If you veer to far from your tastes, things could instantly feel out of sync, off-kilter and not at ease with the rest of your decor.

Create a woodland theme this festive season and embrace the Scandi style of decorating.

Go that one step bolder by introducing heaps of jewel colours and mismatched patterns for an interesting look.

2. Warm and Cosy

Your living room is going to be your hibernation spot over the Christmas period, so make it as cosy as can be with sumptuous cable-knit blankets and cushions and soft faux fur throws. Drape a rustic pine cone garland along your mantelpiece and hang a star made from twigs on the chimney breast above.

When it comes to rustic Christmas living rooms, you can never have too many soft and cosy textures, from your cushions and blankets to your rugs. In this room, even the armchair has been upholstered with snuggly cable-knit fabric. Go all out by adding a woolly stocking for Santa to fill with well-deserved goodies.

3. NATURAL FEATHERS & GLINTS OF GOLD

This is a festive colour scheme that’s often overlooked because neutral tones simply aren’t often associated with Christmastime. The key here is to use natural tones with varied texture. The whole scheme will feel effortless, subtle and beautifully different.

Adorning your Christmas tree with hanging decorations made of real feathers is a perfect way to explore this look. They reflect the light in a very understated way and the feathers will often have a gentle, bronzed sheen to them. Look out for those dusted in glitter too so that your scheme has some sparkle. The arrival of cooler temperatures, autumn hues, and nature changing before our eyes…snuggling up…Settling in…call it what you want, the arrival of autumn is our cue to find our comfort zone.

Adding autumn touches of decor to your home will help you transition into the new season. Small seasonal updates to your sitting room can help transform it into a nurturing space that will make sheltering from the elements extra cosy.

Experiment with Materials

This autumn, continue the theme of opulence by introducing classic, sumptuous textures such as tweeds and wools. This can be achieved through statement accessories like cushions and chaises. The continuous trend of tweeds and wools coming into the home as well as in the world of fashion is huge.

Take the edge off autumn by swapping light Summer fabrics and layering on soft, heavier weight textiles. Think plush cushions (we love velvet for a touch of luxe), chunky woven throws and blankets for maximum cosiness. If you’ve got bare floorboards, use a rug to soften the space or treat your feet to a woollen fleece. This also looks great draped on the back of a chair or the arm of a sofa.

Many people are inspired by the colours of changing leaves. The myriad of earthy hues seen among the landscape is often considered the epitome of autumn. Echoing nature, an earthy palette of rich autumnal shades. Burnt orange, crimson, rust, and deep golden yellows as well as rich plum and warm browns evoke the spirit of the season.

With the shorter days, you’ll want to add brighter lighting to your favourite spaces. Lights or lamps with warm light shades on them are the perfect sort of lighting as not only do they give off an ambient glow but they fit in with the autumnal feeling.

Whether you live by them or feel totally unaffected, from popular colours to key furniture choices, everything designed for our homes is influenced by both current and wider trends.

Whilst ‘trends’ change and evolve, they do so at different paces – some are popular for years rather than merely a season.

Consumers don’t want ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ home decor trends when they’re looking to update their interior design. Trends that are sustainable and have longevity are more important when it comes to homewares, than products that will only be popular for a limited period. Modern interior design trends are much more cohesive. They all have elements that can fit in with each other, giving them staying power.

Here are the key trends to look out for in the coming months:

Nordic Retreat

The serene Scandinavian (Scandi) style is updated with hints of patterns and textures. Homewares following this trend are used to create a calm and quiet space. Neutral colours, bleached woods, and simplistic styles is prevalent here. Sustainability and eco-friendly products are particularly popular with this home decor trend. A trend that Heyl Interiors is happy to see has really taken hold with modern interiors.

Nordic

This paired-back look is perfect for creating an effortlessly stylish decor. Last season this look was filled with global-inspired pattern, for 2019 it’s more about simple understated pattern.

Retro Fusion 

This nostalgic trend celebrates and reimagines mid-century home interiors and designs from a bygone era. The colour palettes of the 1950’s and 70’s like greens and mustards and 1920’s art décor all fits in with this trend.

Pinterest revealed ‘Geometric Paint’ as a search term is up 225 per cent, year on year. This indicates an emerging trend for being creative with walls, giving them a retro vibe with new paint techniques.

In previous season we were seeing mustard paired with the Scandi neutrals, for this season this warming shade is matched perfectly with richer jewel tones.

Jewel Shades

For those who love getting creative with colour, rich hues take the spotlight with the Jewel Shades trend this season. Think deep, vibrant tones that add a touch of opulence to your living space – a rich and sophisticated palette of emerald green, sapphire blue, amethyst purple, and ruby red will create a head-turning look.

The luxe tones found within the Jewel Shades trend are truly designed to dazzle, creating a dramatic yet equally comforting mood in the home. Create a beautiful and eye-catching setting by being brave with colour, and experiment with different fabrics and finishes to get the look you desire.

Textiles play a huge part in creating a feeling of decadence with this trend. Whether you decide on opulent velvet or sumptuous satin, the look and feel of your furnishings will enhance the overall richness of your space.

Soft Tropics

Tropical interior design trends have come back but with a much softer feel. The bright colours are switched up for lighter tones. Green is really popular here, but can be brought out with faux florals rather than printed designs. Tropical leaves and prints are up 401% in searches over the last year. This is a really fun home decor trend that echoes nature.

This uplifting trend is a joyous celebration of nature. The botanical prints are delivered in a softer format, diluted by a desaturated colour palette this season. There’s a strong painterly element to a lot of the designs, making the look feel less imposing that out-and-out tropical palms.

Palm prints are the key motif throughout this look, whether real or as part of a fabric or wallpaper design.

Bold wallpapers, such as tropical leaves are going from strength to strength this season. Vibrant bold prints can breathe new life into rooms, big or small.

This summery botanical trend is testament that our love of nature continues to grow.

Global Essence

Consumers are looking for authentic handcrafted homeware products that take influence from around the globe. They want products with a layer of interest that tell a story. Rugs, wall hangings, wicker baskets and pottery are perfect for this look. Handmade imperfections are celebrated, and no two things are the same.

This trend, continuing from last season, is a diverse celebration of globally-inspired patterns – taking homes on a journey of global eclecticism. Rich tones and rugged textures symbolise the authentic, handcrafted style of this nomadic trend.

Look out for hand-dyed textiles in rich earthy pigments and hand-thrown pottery.

Urban Minimalist

Here, functionality and versatility takes centre stage as the next generation champions a more fluid and transient lifestyle.

With calm and well-organised homes in demand, combined with smaller living spaces, more of us are wanting practical yet stylish design solutions. Our New Outdoor Garden Furniture: From Design to Finish

We thought it might be cool to give you a bit of background story to our latest furniture piece: The Outdoor Box and Trestle Frame Tables

What Inspired us to make it?

I’d like to say that this wonderful summer is what inspired me to make this new outdoor furniture range but we haven’t really had the best summer this year have we. Truth be told, we have lots of design ideas for summer furniture and most of them are inspired by the current industrial look that is trending with interior. We noticed that there is not much garden furniture out there that replicates this industrial look so we started work on designing some!

Our Materials

Key to the Industrial look is the ‘chunky feel’ created by the right choice of materials. For our table top we used four thick reclaimed wood railway sleepers. The bench is also made from one of these sleepers. Unlike many table tops, ours is not glued together but bolted together underneath. The frame is made from reclaimed steel.

The Design Process

We knew that we wanted substantial table top space to accommodate up 8 people which makes sense considering the size of the four sleepers. This was never going to be a dainty little piece of furniture! Given that the table and bench are for outdoors use, we had to treat the wood so that it would be weather resistant. This also informed our decision not to glue the beams together and bolt them together instead – wood left to the elements will expand, contract and warp. For variation we opted for two different frames; the box frame and Trestle frame.

We are over the moon for the end results and feel like it perfectly conveys the solid, rustic and chunky aesthetic that we wanted to achieve. As the pictures hopefully show, it is a visually striking piece of outdoor furniture that looks great in the garden as a centrepiece. Using a bench as seating can also help make room for more people. Choosing wall decor wisely, such as a mirror instead of dark colours, can also help to make your space seem larger.

Light Fixtures

Dining room light fixtures will largely depend on the height of your ceiling. If you have high ceilings, a chandelier is the perfect fixture for a dining room. Even if you have an industrial or muted taste, using a chandelier in a dining room helps speak to the traditionalism of the space. There are beautiful modern chandeliers that can be used without seeming over the top.

Several things may impact a decision from the shape and size of your table to the number of lumens or watts you may need to set the right mood, especially if your space is a multi-use spot for various activities like crafting or homework.

If you have lower ceilings, semi-flush mount lighting is also a good option. Sitting high on the ceiling without being fully flushed, it also uses the reflection on the ceiling itself to add more light to a room. Pendant lights can help set a mood if you use a low watt lightbulb as well. You can also use wall sconces as supplementary lighting to help set a mood at night or bring more light.

The centrepiece on a dining room table is meant to be the focal point of the space. The traditional dining table centrepiece is of course, a floral arrangement. This can be upgraded with a modern touch by using a unique floral arrangement, a large vase, or using a plant instead.

Using a wooden or metal dish, either empty or lined with moss or river stones, is also a great example of a creative modern centrepiece. Our industrial but contemporary reclaimed wood furniture is perfectly accompanied by these kind of natural looking centre-pieces. A large glass or metallic vase filled with fruit, stones, or vegetables can also add elegance and class to your space.

Walls

Choosing decor for the walls of your modern dining room is one of the most difficult parts. If you have a smaller space, using a large mirror can help to add more light and make the room seem larger. Have a love for photography or showing off your family? Having a gallery wall of multiple photos or a few large pictures of some treasured memories is a great way to foster relationships over dinner. Even though wallpapering an entire room is out of vogue, having a wallpapered wall of graphic design as an accent in a dining room is a great modern feature.

Feeling adventurous? Using a hanging garden or a large tree against a wall if you have a lot of natural light is a beautiful way to decorate your dining room walls!
